Bored of simply trying to get the highest score? Here are a few axe throwing games you can try.
Standard
Recommended for 1+ players.
The goal of this game is to have the highest score after 10 throws.
How to play:
- Players take turns throwing at the target.
- Each player scores points based on the area of the board they hit.
- After 10 throws, the player with the highest score is the winner.
H. O. R. S. E.
Recommended for 2+ players.
In this game, you must match the throws of the other players.
How to play:
- Player 1 throws the axe and hits somewhere on the target.
- All other players attempt to hit the same scoring zone on the target.
- Any player that misses the intended scoring zone earns a letter.
- After all players have thrown, Player 2 gets to throw and determine the new scoring area.
- The first player to spell HORSE loses.
Example gameplay:
- Anna throws the axe and hits the two (2) ring.
- Jessie throws next and hits the five (5) ring. Jessie earns an H.
- Derek throws last and hits the four (4) ring. Derek has an H from an earlier round, so he earns an O.
- Jessie starts the next round. She throws and hits the six (6) ring.
Variations:
- Use another word instead of HORSE. Longer words make for longer games.
- Specify how each player must throw. One handed, two handed, heavy axe, light axe, or one of our multiblades. Remember: We do not allow trick shots unless supervised by an axe throwing coach!
Around the World
Recommended for 1+ players.
In this game, you must hit every scoring area of the target in order.
How to play:
- Each player gets three attempts to hit their scoring area.
- If a player hits, their turn is immediately over. On their next turn, they move up to the next scoring area.
- If a player does not hit their scoring area after three attempts. Their turn ends. On their next turn, they aim for the same scoring area.
- The first player to hit all six rings and a killshot wins the game.
Example gameplay:
- Anna throws the axe and hits a one (1). Her turn ends immediately. On the next round, Anna will aim for the two (2) ring.
- Jessie throws and hits a five (5), a three (3), and a two (2). Her turn ends. On the next round, Jessie will still aim for the one (1) ring.
21
Recommended for 2+ players.
The goal of this game is to get closest to 21 points without going over.
How to play:
- Players throw at the target. Each player may throw as many or as few times as they want. All their throws are added together and recorded.
- If any player exceeds 21 points, they "bust" and are out of the round.
- At the end of the round, the player closest to 21 points wins.
Example gameplay:
- Anna throws first. She hits two 5s (10pts), a 2 (12pts), and two 3s (18pts). Anna decides to end her turn.
- Jessie throws next. They hit three 4s (12pts), and two 3s (18pts). On their next throw, they hit a 5 (23pts) and bust. Jessie is out of the round.
- Anna wins.
Landmines
Recommended for 8-16 players, in teams.
The goal of this game is to reach 50.
How to play:
- "Landmines" are point totals of 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50.
- Players take turns throwing at the target, adding their score to the team total.
- If a players new score would land the team on a landmine total, the landmine blows up and the team loses 10 points instead of scoring the points from the throw.
- After a landmine has exploded, it cannot be set off again for either team.
- The first team to 50 points wins.
Example gameplay:
- Anna's team has 15 points. She hits a 2. Her team now has 17 points.
- Jessie's team has 14 points. She hits a bullseye for 6 points, which triggers the 20-point landmine. Instead of scoring 6 points, her team loses 10 points. Her team's score is now 4 points.
- Anna's team throws next (remember, they have 17 points). They hit a 3, bringing them to 20 points. Because Jessie's team already set off the 20-point landmine, Anna's team does not explode. Their score is now 20 points.
